The University of Macau held a talk in Collegiate Leaning Day (7 September2016) at the Anthony Lau Building (E4-G078). Mr. Davy Liu, the first Chinese to join Walt Disney Feature Animation, was invited to share his life experience in the talk “Dreams for Cows and Cowboys – Pursue Personal Creativity Mindset”. Being called as an “unintelligent” child by his parents and teachers in the past, he successfully became an animator of the well-known animation such as “The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Mulan”. Later, he established his animation company inspired by his motto, “Can Do”, which brought him another career achievement.

During this talk, Mr. Liu repeatedly emphasized his value, “Don’t Treat Diamond as Marble” in order to encourage the audience. He said that, they should be confident and believe in their values which are as precious as diamonds. It is important for them to be creative, and become unique cowboys to lead the cows to overcome the obstacles and rejection in their lives. The students were inspired by Mr. Liu’s encouragement and they kept asking questions for discussion and expressed their thought about the talk, which highlighted the atmosphere of the event.

In the afternoon, a sharing session by Mr. Liu was held in Lui Che Woo College. In the session, he shared his creating and marketing process of “The Lion King” to the audience. Also he talked about the exquisite and distinctive design of “Mulan” and compared the features of western and western animation. He expressed that, even though an animation can look simple, there was a creating team who strived for excellence for this production. At the end of the session, Mr. Liu gave some suggestions of self-understanding and self-discovery to students by sharing his life experience.
